About
Hi, how are you?
-Daniel Johnston 1983
Thanks for following your curiosity far enough to learn a little bit more about me. It doesn’t always end in dead cats. I was born and partially raised in Richmond, VA. After my state mandated education, I spent some time on the outer banks of North Carolina.
I studied Magnum P.I., served barbecue sandwiches, made coleslaw in 5 gallon buckets (which I was instructed to “just mix with my arm”) and produced hush puppies by the thousands. After catching a glimpse of myself in the mirror wearing a hairnet for the hundredth something time; the beach life, as well as myself, grew increasingly unattractive.
I scrubbed the grease from the deep fryer off of my arms for what I hoped would be the last time and moved back to Richmond. I jockeyed the counter of a camera shop for a few years, then moved to Miami, FL to weight train with Iggy Pop. While in south beach, I had the good fortune to assist some amazing, kind, generous, brilliant photographers. Conversely, I paid my dues working for some photographers on the completely polar opposite end of the spectrum. I wouldn’t trade any of it. These experiences proved paramount in my development as a photographer.
I started shooting on my own and picked up a few awesome clients. I moved to San Francisco in hopes of weaseling my way into the Bohemian Club. After a handful of somewhat untruthful attempts, I was classified as a weaving spider and not so subtly urged to leave San Francisco. “Perhaps the entire state of California would not be a bad idea either”, I think may have been the exact words.
Missing the relaxing conveniences and charms of living in a small town, I packed up a moving truck. After spending 13 days watching the sunset in my oversized side view mirror, I found myself excited to be back in Richmond, VA. Shooting editorial and advertising work and happy to be back in a town where you still hear the contraction y’all and you can order a proper sweet tea.
